Now is the perfect time to lift and split your perennials. This will increases their vigor, give you more plants  and also provide extras to share with friends.

Also don't forget to improve your soil–the true secret to garden success and low maintenance- while you have your plants out of the ground.

Want to have super drought tolerant and bigger plants? Prepare the sub-soil with my easy steps:

  1. Have a wheel barrel on hand, dry organic fertilizer, and compost
  2. Using a border spade lift out the top 6" of soil and place in wheel barrel
  3. Using a border fork, pierce the now exposed sub-soil (that layer of soil under the top soil) and push the fork down as deeply as possibly , then rock the fork back and forth cracking and opening the earth.
  4. Put in 2-3" of compost on top of the piercing.
  5. If a planting hole, add top soil back to hole, add 2-3" of compost on top along with fertilizer and mix with fork.
  6. Now you are ready to re-plant.

Happy Fall!
