Week 1: Before you Start Seeds

I am so looking forward to spending Seed Starting Saturdays with you! I hope that these weekly videos will help guide you and let you know that we don’t always do it right either. Having blunders and failures is just part of gardening and it’s OK–better yet learn from them.

This week gives the information you need to gather to build your seed starting schedule. Making lists and searching out some key information that will get you started on a successful seed starting season. Shop our seed-starting equipment.

Lisa

Lisa’s takeaway notes:

If I was a home gardener: I would be considering how much space do I really have to plant? This will help you make realistic choices on how many seeds to start.

If I was a flower farmer: An additional bit of information I would explore– does that flower you want to grow have a good track record as a long-lasting cut flower? Nothing is more disappointing in a cutting garden than a flower that doesn’t hold up in the vase.

Week 2 – Planning and Gathering

Welcome to Week 2 of Seed-Starting Saturdays! This week is all about getting your peas in a row. Having what you need to do the job at the right time. It is so easy to watch a seed-starting window slide away when you don’t have the seed or blocking mix ready and waiting. Get prepared!

Writing on the calendar may seem daunting–but it is what keeps the farm in transplants. So get it down on paper and move on to the real fun– seed shopping!  Gathering seeds and supplies will have you on the way to having transplants ready at planting time. Spring is coming! Shop our seed-starting equipment.

Lisa’s takeaway notes:

If I was a home gardener: I’d call my local Cooperative Extension Office to learn my last expected frost date for my area.

If I was a flower farmer: I’d make sure I had enough trays to carry me through the seed starting season–nothing hurts worse than no more trays!

Week 3: Preparing for Seedlings

Welcome to Week 3 of Seed Starting Saturdays! This week I am sharing my tips for caring for seedlings–from feeding baby plants to squeezing more space out of a seedling heat mat. Growing a healthy seedling is the start to a strong garden growing plant.

Please post your questions and comments at the bottom of this page–I’ll answer! Shop our seed-starting equipment.

Lisa’s takeaway notes:

If I was a home gardener: I’d be on the lookout for cookie cooling racks that have tall legs to expand my heat mat space!

If I was a flower farmer: I would set up my seed starting station for the long haul—I start seeds almost every month of the year.

Week 4: Making Soil Blocks

Welcome to Week 4 of Seed Starting Saturdays! Believe it or not, doing these videos is helping to keep me on track too. Sometimes I just have to be reminded of some of the simple things to do to get to the finish line of the big picture.
This week I share more tips, make some blocks and move up a small block into the larger block.  Enjoy!

Lisa

Lisa’s takeaway notes:

If I was a home gardener: I’d head over to Lisa’s Tips and Tricks for more on seed starting!

If I was a flower farmer: I would be leaning on the side of starting seeds a smidgen later than earlier to keep from having to pot on to the next size up. Better to have short healthy versus overgrown tall plants.

Week 5: Planting

Welcome to Week 5 of Seed Starting Saturdays! This week we take a walkout to the garden to see those Stock seedlings we’ve been following planted and see some of our direct-seeded crops.

Please post your questions and comments at the bottom of this page–I’ll answer! Shop our seed-starting equipment.

Week 6: Wrap Up

Welcome to Week 6 of Seed Starting Saturdays! This week I’m answering some of your questions. As we are heading into the growing season remember to succession plant. Don’t try to start everything at once. It’s a recipe for mid-season disaster!
