Cool Flowers by Lisa Mason Ziegler

Everyone longs for early, fragrant spring blossoms – Snapdragons, Bells of Ireland, Sweet Peas, Sweet Williams and other beauties. But few grow them successfully in their own gardens because they haven’t learned the simple techniques that make it possible.

Expert flower farmer Lisa Mason Ziegler introduces us to 30 of the long-blooming stars of the spring garden: the hardy annuals – those flowers that thrive when they are planted during cool conditions (instead of waiting until the warmth of spring to plant, and losing half the season!).

With the author’s simple planting how-to’s, you’ll have a low-maintenance, vibrant spring flower garden that keeps on blooming…and blooming… long before the “tender annuals” get started!

Cool flowers thrive in my climate. Living in the chilly Pacific Northwest, zone 8b, we rarely have days above 80 in the summer and our nights are usually in the high 50’s. By starting seeds in January and planting them out in March and April, I have flowers all spring and long into the summer. Because I don’t have a hot season, many cool flowers continue to bloom right through until August or even Sept. It takes courage to plant out those little babies when it’s still freezing out, but even though the leaves look terrible by May, those roots are ready to roll when the sun comes out. This year I’m going to make myself an area to plant some in the fall and see what happens. “Cool Flowers” changed my cutting garden for the better, and now it supplies our wedding floral business with the addition of dahlias and sunflowers. http://www.blushblossomsfloral.com

This book is a such a great source for learning about and getting you started on planting flowers at a time of year you probably never considered before. The most amazing part of your purchase….it comes with a video tutorial series that it an amazing resource and honestly the fact that they offer it to you for FREE for the LIFE of your account it just incredible. This is just one of the many reasons, I have ordered over 80% of my gardening supplies from this company. You want to support the local businesses that do so much to help gardeners love flowers and growing as much as they clearly do!

Lisa, thank you so much for what you do! I have really enjoyed your books and videos. What a resource! I used to feel bad because I have what I thought was a short growing season…now I know I have a shorter warm season, but a long cool season. I can still grow beautiful flowers and delicious food! Last year I had snaps into August because of our cool nights. Thank you for opening my eyes.
