Meet Steve & Gretel Adams

Steve and Gretel Adams started Sunny Meadows Flower Farm in 2006. Being first-generation farmers, they have built the farm from scratch to what it is today, working from 1/4 acre with a homesteading vibe, to now 20 acres of production. They have experienced all the growing pains of having different economies of scale on their farm- building infrastructure, a productive and efficient team, and all the systems required to run such an operation. Through growing flowers, they have developed a love for farming and a strong drive to make their farming business the most efficient and profitable to provide a living for themselves and their team.

The farm is located in Columbus, Ohio in winter hardiness zone 6A. With 17 structures in production along with field growing, they are able to produce flowers from March to November. Their ability to produce flowers in the high-demand flower colder seasons allows for extended sales and better year-round employee retention.  They have narrowed down their sales outlets to be mostly wholesale to florists and grocers, but still have some retail opportunities with their Farmstand and online shop.  They have through the years sold in many different retail and wholesale outlets while they found and built their market, so can speak knowledgeably about all the outlets possible in the cut flower market from weddings to farmer’s markets, wholesalers, and more.  They focus on both high-production field crops, and also specialty greenhouse crops to provide a nice selection through the season. Their passion drives their growth to supply more people with domestically-grown flowers as year-round as possible, helping to regrow the domestic flower market.

Through their farming journey, they have learned so much from others that have been mentors and friends in the industry.  Through that journey and the resulting success, it is important for them to share their experiences and knowledge with the wider farming community.  Steve and Gretel have spoken at many conferences over the years and are members of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers. They were regular contributors for Growing For Market magazine and other farming publications with over 30 articles published over the course of the past decade.

What Students Are Saying About This Course!

8 reviews for Flower Farming School Online: Growing Cut-Flower Crops in Hoop and Greenhouses

  1. Carol

This course was so full of information, with lots and lots of Powerpoint slides. So much information that it is going to take me a few times of rewatching to understand and absorb it all. Although they did show us some live recordings I really wish they had done more of this recording and speaking on camera live out in the field or hoophouses. Showing us more hands on rather than just seeing it as a still photo and reading the information to us. They have so much great knowledge they need to write a book. I for one would buy it immediately!

  2. Vanessa Knock

A fantastic course. Marketed as growing in hoops and greenhouses; don’t let the title throw you off. There is so much information about growing different crops if you are looking for that too. This course is fun, informative and what you need right now to grow your business. The best money you will ever spend on improving your business is this course from people who have been there, made the mistakes, sharing the good, the bad, and the improved. You can’t get more real than this course.

  3. Lorri

Steve and Gretel’s course is jam packed will relevant, hands on information for growing in structures. And I appreciate how they welcomed every question with thorough, real time experiences. If I have any suggestion,it is to reconsider when questions are due for the Q&A as the Monday morning deadline often slipped by me. The other suggestion is to Gretel on ensuring her voice stays out of that friendly ‘grovel’ pitch. I was like a sponge and wanted to absorb as much detail as possible, but sometimes had trouble understanding Gretel. Thank you both for teaching us what you know and to Lisa for recognizing the need for this course!

  4. LIZ KRIEG

I have been growing in tunnels for some time now. Steve and Gretel have put together a solid course that – even I – got numerous pointers and tips from. I particularly like the way they have worked to expand and streamline operations, have found the best ways to maximize space, and have developed a solid schedule for the planting, growing and harvesting of many, various top-shelf crops. I met them several years ago and they have grown their farm exponentially in such a short time since. They are hard working, problem solving, righteous people that I admire greatly.
This course is definitely one that every flower farmer should take advantage of. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone back to re-hear things that I have learned (in the comfort of my own home) and it is so great to know that I will always be able to do this, anytime. A solid investment!!
